Listen to full episode :
Kerry Benjoe, editor of Eagle Feather News, (now EFN Media) shares insights into the publication, which has been a vital resource in Saskatchewan since 1992. Producing 10,000 copies monthly with an extended online readership of approximately 26,000, Eagle Feather News focuses on Indigenous stories and community achievements. Kerry, who initially pursued law, found her passion for journalism through the INCA Summer Institute and has since dedicated her career to storytelling that highlights both the struggles and triumphs within Indigenous communities.
Under Kerry’s leadership, the publication emphasizes positive narratives, such as the revival of the Tony Cote Winter Games by the James Smith Cree Nation. Despite being a one-person operation, Kerry works with freelancers to produce diverse content, including elder profiles, business features, and reconciliation efforts. Her vision is to grow Eagle Feather News into a multi-platform media outlet that remains deeply rooted in Indigenous storytelling and community engagement, ensuring these narratives are accessible and respected. The paper is distributed free to First Nations communities and various Indigenous organizations, while online subscriptions offer broader access.
